Uber driver destroys female passenger's phone and attempts to assault her physically

An Uber driver called Jude Idoko allegedly tried to physically assault a female passenger after he had broken her phone and it was only the timely intervention of passersby that kept him from carrying out further assault on the woman.

Jude, who drives a Toyota Corolla, had reportedly picked the woman for a trip to Yaba but during the journey, he demanded that the trip be made "off book" and she should pay N10,000. She refused and he turned aggressive.

He grabbed her phone and bag then tried to hit her. He only stopped because people gathered but by the time he handed over the phone, it was already cracked. The incident was shared on Facebook by a friend of the woman with the hopes of finding the culprit and making sure justice is served.

Police Officer Feared Dead As Armed Men Attack Check Point In Onitsha

Two armed men operating on a motorcycle on Wednesday reportedly killed a police officer and made away with his AK47 riffle in Onitsha, Anambra. The incident occurred barely three weeks after a police inspector was killed at a road block at Ugwunwasike round-about, Ogidi near Onitsha.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said Wednesday's incident occurred at about 3.30pm at a check point near Nkpor junction

The source said the hoodlums shot the policeman at close range, collected his riffle and sped-off, adding that the incident made people around and other police officers scamper for safety.

Efforts to get further details of the deceased and the mortuary where his body was deposited from the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr Mark Jafaru was not successful.

Jafaru said the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Nkeiru Nwode was in a better position to comment on the development.

However, when Nwode was contacted on phone, she said "I have not been brief on that; when I am fully briefed, I will brief you people."

Wednesday's incident makes it the third reported case of gun snatching around Onitsha this year by armed men with police officers being allegedly killed in the process

Senate gives NNPC, CBN, others 2 wks to submit budgets

The Senate has given Acting President Yemi Osinbajo a two-week ultimatum to direct all government agencies that have failed to submit their 2017 budget proposals to the National Assembly in line with extant laws for consideration and approval, to do so or the affected agencies would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

The Senate also promised that once it gets the budget, it will make it public, work on it diligently as well as turn it around as quickly as possible.

Similarly, the senate has summoned the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, National Petroleum Investment Management Services, NAPIMS, Chevron Nigeria Limited and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, over allegation contained in a petition accusing them of tax irregularities.

The summon was issued, yesterday, by the Senator Magnus Abe (APC, Rivers) led Senate Adhoc Committee on the alleged fraud against Chevron.

Bukola Saraki
Speaking shortly after the inauguration of the committee by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who was represented by Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, Senator Abe noted that the committee will not be biased in its investigation, vowing to uncover truth behind the $5 billion Tax fraud allegation against Chevron.

People can't spend money without approval —Saraki

Meanwhile, speaking while giving acting President Osinbajo a two-week ultimatum to direct all government agencies to submit their budgets for consideration and approval, the Senate President, Saraki, noted that Nigeria as a country fighting corruption, cannot continue "this way where people will be spending money without approval, without appropriations. It must stop, it will stop and is going to stop from now."

The Senate ultimatum, was sequel to a motion by Senate Deputy Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na' Allah (APC, Kebbi State).

Senator Na'Allah in his presentation, said, the "Senate is worried about the non-submission of the 2017 budget proposal by Statutory Corporations to the National Assembly.

"Senate notes that section 21 (1-3) of the Fiscal Responsibility Act stipulates that: "The government corporations and agencies and government-owned companies listed in the Schedule to this Act shall, not later than six months from the commencement of this Act and for every three financial years, thereafter, and not later than the end of the second quarter of every year, cause to be prepared and submitted to the Minister, their Schedule estimates of revenue and expenditure for the next three financial years.

"Each of the bodies referred to in sub-section (1) of this section shall submit to the Minister not later than the end of August in each financial year: (a) an annual budget derived from the estimates submitted in pursuance of subsection (1) of this section and (b) projected operating surplus which shall be prepared in line with acceptable accounting practices.

"The Minister shall cause the estimates submitted in pursuance of subsection (2) of this section to be attached as part of the draft Appropriation Bill to be submitted to the National Assembly.

"Senate observes that non-compliance with the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act constitutes abuse of power and economic sabotage aimed at frustrating the current economic measures being taken by the current administration to address the economic recession."

In his remarks, Senate President, Saraki, noted that the action must be taken very seriously against the backdrop that the huge amount of money independent revenue gets, exceeds what the country gets from oil, saying: "Let me thank the Deputy Leader for this very important motion. Truly, this motion is at the heart of the fight against corruption and it is very important as we see that independent revenue, the amount of money independent revenue gets even exceeds what we get from oil revenue.

"Clearly we have made our position that based on this amendment, these agencies must get their budgets to us in t

Osinbajo’ll sign when budget is ready — AIDE

The Office of the Acting President yesterday cleared the air over the assent of the 2017 budget affirming that it would be singed into law when and if the Acting President expresses satisfaction with the bill.

Fielding questions from State House Correspondents earlier after the Federal Executive Council, FEC meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed also disclosed that ministers were studying the budget as passed by the National Assembly.

Spokesman to the Acting President, Mr. Laolu Akande in a tweet late last night said "Just so we are clear: when the time comes, everything is set and he is satisfied, Ag. President Yemi Osinbajo will assent to the 2017 budget."

Briefing newsmen after the FEC meeting, Alhaji Mohammed said that an advanced copy of the budget had been received by the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Mr Udo Udoma.

According to Mohammed, Udoma is expected to make the advance copy available to other Ministers to compare with the estimates they originally sent to the National Assembly.

This, he said, was necessary to reconcile all anticipated discrepancies.

"In respect on the budget, it was only this morning (yesterday) that the Minister of National Planning informed the council that the budget had been passed. He has not sent to us individually copies of the passed budget. We now need to look at it against what we sent and if there are any discrepancies, we will report back to the Minister of Budget and National Planning on harmonization.

"But at least, the minister has received an advance copy of what was passed and that is what we need to look at and compare to what we sent. It has not been transmitted officially to the presidency," he said.

Asked on the performance of the 2016 budget, Mohammed said that accurate information can only emanate from the Budget and National Planning Ministry.

"The Ministry of Budget and National Planning will make the implementation of the 2016 budget public. They have told us that about N1.2 trillion was released for capital," he said.

On when the new cleared ministers would be sworn in, the Minister said, "I can assure you that they would be sworn in due course."

The Minister also hinted that council interacted with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mamod Yakubu on the continuous Voters Registration.

"We invited the chairman of the INEC to address council on the ongoing Voters registration and to let the challenges he is facing. The import of the exercise and I think Council was satisfied with the presentation. First, he made it known that this is the first time that we are going to have a real continuous Voters Registration. Not the one that comes on before election or registration that goes on only in some parts of the country.

"He also explained why it was not possible for the exercise to be conducted on pooling unit basis because we have about 119,000 plus polling units. We need a minimum of five personnel to man each unit and the cost cannot be accommodated by their budget. Of course, the next preferred option would have been to take it to the local govt which again, because of paucity of funds, they could not accommodate. That's why they are doing it at the local government basis.

"But the important thing is that it is continuous. It will go on in the next 90 days and then continue for another 90 days," he said.
